Completed in 1999, the timber framed Welcome Center has become a Vermont Landmark, attracting over 1.5 million visitors a year. The building uses traditional materials and construction methods to provide a modern service to travelers on Interstate 91 at the Massachusetts border. The building includes a white pine, hard hewn timber frame, wide board oak floors and slate and lead coated copper roofing. The site development included sewer and water improvements; access road construction; highway on and off ramps; ¾ miles of internal roadways; parking lots for cars, buses and semi-trailers; picnic areas; a public plaza; a playground and four outbuildings – two of which include white oak timber frames. The project was honored with numerous awards including the 2000 AIA Vermont Award for Excellence in Architecture and the People’s Choice Award. View images: |
